Did you know that most people tend to gain weight during the holidays? While overeating is often cited as the main cause of weight gain, a lack of physical activity and exercise also plays a role.
Unfortunately, during vacations and the holidays, people tend to put their workout routines on hold because there’s more hustle and bustle than usual, and it seems like there’s no time left for exercise. If you want to stay in shape during Christmas and New Year’s, today we’re sharing 5 practical tips to help you get through the holidays more easily:
1. Eat before you go out
Eat something healthy and filling before you go out. Doing so will reduce the temptation to eat more than you need to and make it easier to avoid unhealthy choices.
2. Avoid skipping meals
Start your day with your usual, proper breakfast. If you’re heading to a festive dinner in the evening, you might be tempted to skip meals, but this can lead to even bigger binge-eating episodes. Instead, eat smaller portions more frequently throughout the day to avoid a late-night binge.
3. Choose water as your drink
Alcohol and other sugary drinks only add extra calories, so consume them in moderation and opt instead for water—which you can flavor with a slice of lemon or cucumber—or drink herbal tea without sugar.
4. Stay active
If possible, try to find a way to be physically active every day. If you can’t fit a workout into your schedule during the busy Christmas week, try to incorporate more movement into your daily routine —for example, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car farther away, get off the bus one stop early, or walk whenever possible.

5. Make Your Workouts a Priority
We recommend writing your workouts into your calendar and treating them as an important appointment with yourself. The easiest way is to work out first thing in the morning; that way, you won’t be tempted to skip your workout later in the day, and you’ll be able to get all your other tasks done.
Happy upcoming holidays! 😊
